Located at the eastern gate of The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, The Dalles serves as a center of commerce for a five county area that includes Wasco, Hood, and Sherman counties of Oregon and Skamania and Klickitat counties in Washington State.

The historic downtown currently boasts an extensive renaissance program which features a variety of projects sponsored by both public and non-profit dollars with the objective of recapturing the historic past of the area and building a healthy economic community for residents and visitors alike.
